Understanding Financial Independence
Achieving early retirement isn't just about accumulating wealth; it is about decoupling your living expenses from active labor through sustainable, compounding assets.
What is FIRE?
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. By keeping active expenses moderate and allocating a large percentage of after-tax income into compounding assets, individuals build a portfolio capable of supporting their cost of living indefinitely.
How does the FIRE Calculator work?
The calculator projects your current investments forward using an inflation-adjusted real return. It calculates your required nest egg using your safe withdrawal rate, matching your savings curve against your target line to find your intersection age.
Common FIRE Approaches
- Lean FIRE: Retiring on a minimal budget (typically under $40,000/year). Focuses on extreme frugality and minimalism.
- Traditional FIRE: Retiring with a standard cost of living ($40k to $100k/year) to maintain your middle-class lifestyle.
- Fat FIRE: Retiring with a higher spending budget (exceeding $100k/year) for luxury, travel, and comfort without sacrifices.
- Coast FIRE: Having enough saved early on that, without adding more, your investments compound to meet your target FIRE goal by retirement.
The Safe Withdrawal Rate (SWR) & 4% Rule
The 4% rule is a commonly used planning assumption based on historical studies. It originated from the Trinity Study (1998), which showed that withdrawing 4% of your nest egg in the first year of retirement, and subsequently adjusting that dollar amount only for inflation, results in a portfolio success rate of over 95% over a 30-year span.
Calculations & Critical Assumptions
Your FIRE number represents the portfolio size needed to support your cost of living using your chosen SWR. Our calculations project buying power in today's dollars by subtracting inflation directly from nominal returns, preventing distorted future cost assumptions.
