Categories classify your transactions — Groceries, Restaurants, Income, Transfer, and so on — so that budgets (either as spending limits or envelopes), insights and charts can group your spending meaningfully. Each category carries a color that's used consistently across the app.
How it works
- Start with sensible defaults. Moza ships with common categories out of the box.
- Add your own. Create custom categories with their own names and colors — your colors are respected everywhere, in the ledger, charts and budgets.
- Envelopes in Allocation style. If you enable Allocation Planning, your categories serve as the envelopes where you assign funds.
- Assign as you go. Pick a category when you record a transaction, or set one when reviewing a scanned receipt.
- Changes flow through. Re-categorizing a transaction recomputes budgets and insights automatically.
Limitations
- Deleting a category that's in use will either reassign its transactions or be blocked, depending on the situation — so you never lose meaning silently.
Common Questions
Can I create my own categories?
Yes. Add custom categories with their own names and colors alongside the built-in defaults.
What happens if I delete a category?
If transactions use it, Moza asks you to reassign them to another category first so your history stays intact.
Do transfer categories affect my budgets?
No. Transfer categories are excluded from spending calculations by default.
